Subjecting Radiologic Imaging to the Linear No-Threshold Hypothesis: A Non Sequitur of Non-Trivial Proportion...

Jan 29, 2017 by

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27493264 Abstract Radiologic imaging is claimed to carry an iatrogenic risk of cancer, based on an uninformed commitment to the 70-y-old linear no-threshold hypothesis (LNTH). Credible evidence of imaging-related low-dose (<100 mGy) carcinogenic risk is nonexistent; it is a hypothetical risk derived from the demonstrably false LNTH. On the contrary, low-dose radiation does not cause, but more likely helps prevent, cancer. The LNTH and its offspring, ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable), are fatally flawed, focusing only on molecular damage while ignoring protective, organismal biologic responses. Although some grant the absence of low-dose harm, they nevertheless advocate the “prudence” of dose optimization (i.e., using ALARA doses); but this is a radiophobia-centered, not scientific, approach. Medical imaging studies achieve a diagnostic purpose and should be governed by the highest science-based principles and policies. The LNTH...

A Certified Health Physicist’s Reflections on a 40-Year Career in Radiation Protection...

Nov 17, 2016 by

This is a reflection from a certified health physicist regarding his becoming aware, during his 40-year career, that the linear no-threshold (LNT) model and the associated As Low As Reasonably Achievable concept have no scientific basis and make no positive contribution to radiation safety. They should be replaced by an alternative, scientifically based model that includes a threshold, below which there is no harm, and recognition of hormesis and the adaptive response, which reflect the benefits of low-dose and low-dose-rate radiation exposure. Continued use of the unscientific LNT model is not conservative, as most regulators complacently claim but actually harmful. Examples of these harmful impacts in the areas of nuclear power, nuclear medicine, and environmental management are included.  To read this article in full, please visit the International Dose-Response Society...

Mervyn Cohen’s IPR talk – 2016 – “Should the ALARA concept and Image Gently campaign be terminated?”...

May 20, 2016 by

I am charged with the difficult task of presenting the argument that ALARA and Image Gently should be terminated. My plea to you all is to use the infrastructure and energy provided by Image Gently to provide your patients with the best possible care. But, make changes because they are the correct thing to do, not because of a hypothetical fear of radiation. We will present evidence that ALARA and Image Gently have caused harm to our patients by getting them to believe that there is a risk of getting cancer from a CT scan. Mervyn Cohen IPR...

Low-dose radiation exposure should not be feared – Green Valley News...

Jan 30, 2016 by

http://www.gvnews.com/opinion/columns/editorial-when-scientists-fail-at-science-why-low-dose-radiation/article_6de9d768-671f-11e5-9fc1-a3c4da95f8e0.html The following op-ed was rejected by a popular physics journal and seven of the country’s leading newspapers, including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Washington Post, and LA Times. It is at least as important to know that the mass media, with the notable exception of our own Green Valley News, generally refuse to acknowledge that, for the better part of a century, the science of radiation biology has been corrupted by special interests, such as self-perpetuating regulatory agencies and certain radiologists whose reputation rests on being harbingers of doom and protectors of the populace. This has caused untold harm to hundreds of thousands of people, who have suffered from unwarranted forced evacuations near nuclear power plant accidents and fear-driven refusal to have necessary and potentially life-saving X-rays and CT...

Radiation: The Facts (brochure)...

Dec 19, 2015 by

Radiation is safe within limits. Nuclear power is a green environmental solution. It generates no CO2. The fuel is cheap and inexhaustible. Green nuclear power can solve the global crises of air pollution deaths and climate change. Cheap energy can help developing nations escape poverty and let industrialized nations improve economic growth.  (..More…) Download (PDF, Unknown)  Download (PDF, Unknown) https://sites.google.com/site/radiationsafetylimits/home...
