Surrebuttal to Ansari response – December 2019

For your interest, attached is our penned surrebuttal to both Dr. Ansari’s reply to our letter to the editor of the Journal of Radiological Protection, and to the accompanying invited editorial by Drs. Ansari, Kleinhans, and Boice (exact references included in the attachment) https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1361-6498/ab15e6 . The journal has declined to print our surrebuttal, so we are sending it directly to the two of you, to continue our discussion.

We are well aware, from past experience, that Dr. Boice prefers not to engage actively in email discussions such as this, but that does not prompt us to withhold from him access to its development.

We are also copying two organizations of radiation scientists from more than a dozen countries around the world, so they can see how we have framed the discussion. Everyone is invited and urged to participate in this ongoing discussion, even if this journal will not entertain such an exchange. Furthermore, we are more than happy to send full copies of each entry in the exchange to anyone on this distribution list who does not have access and requests such copies.

It would appear that the journal, rather than hosting an unsettled scientific discussion between two opposing lines of reasoning, has, at least for the time being, decided to take a side without justifying its choice. This is a most unfortunate policy for a journal in any field of science.

Yours truly,

Bill Sacks and Jeff Siegel
