In case there are those among us who had not heard of or noted the recent death of David MacKay, Cambridge University physicist and energy analyst, he died last month from stomach cancer at the age of not-quite-49, leaving a wife and two children. David was recently recognized (knighted by the queen – for whatever that’s worth) for his contributions to energy, including his service as Chief Scientific Advisor to the UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).

His second book, Sustainable Energy – without the hot air, was first put online for free (still there at http://www.inference.eng.cam.ac.uk/sustain…/…/tex/sewtha.pdf) and then printed. It contains some of the best graphic material I’ve seen to explain various aspects of energy.
